Kourou, French Guiana — May 19, 2026

The European Space Agency (ESA) successfully launched its SMILE satellite on May 19, 2026, from Kourou, French Guiana, to study the interaction between solar winds and Earth's magnetic field.

Mission Objectives and Scientific Goals

The SMILE mission is designed to capture detailed observations of solar winds and high-energy solar eruptions, as well as Earth's dynamic magnetic shield response. "SMILE soll sowohl Sonnenwinde und energiereiche Ausbrüche der Sonne abbilden als auch die Reaktion des dynamischen Schutzschildes der Erde," according to ESA sources. The satellite carries four instruments to observe X-ray and UV radiation, which are critical for understanding space weather phenomena.
