Three Chinese astronauts from the Shenzhou 21 mission landed safely on Earth on Friday after spending a record-breaking seven months in orbit aboard the Tiangong space station.
The returning crew members — Zhang Lu, Wu Fei, and Zhang Hongzhang — spent more than 200 days in space, according to official reports. This marks the longest single-mission duration ever achieved by a Chinese astronaut crew.
The trio had been living and working on China's Tiangong space station, which translates to "Heavenly Palace" in English. China operates the station in low Earth orbit as its permanent crewed outpost.
Before their departure, the Shenzhou 21 crew handed over control of the Tiangong station to the incoming Shenzhou 23 team. The handover included briefings on two new features aboard the station.
