Risks for the Aging Station

The International Space Station ISS has been permanently crewed for over two decades and is considered one of the most complex engineering structures in spaceflight. It is operated jointly by the USA, Russia, Europe, Japan, and Canada. Coordination between the partners has repeatedly been accompanied by tensions in recent years, especially since the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the resulting sanctions.

The ISS relies on a constant supply from Earth. Cargo capsules such as Northrop Grumman's Cygnus or the Russian Progress regularly supply the crew with food, fuel, and spare parts. Should an evacuation become necessary, the Dragon capsule would be the only US vehicle on board capable of returning to Earth autonomously.

In parallel with the ongoing investigation, NASA is closely monitoring the pressure trend in the Russian segment, according to its own statements. Should the leak rate continue to rise, flight controllers could decide to temporarily seal off the affected module, as has been done in previous leakages. This would require the crew to evacuate parts of the station.

Prepared Evacuation

The latest order highlights how vulnerable the aging space station has become. The ISS has far exceeded its originally planned lifespan; the planned decommissioning is not scheduled until the end of this decade. Until then, crew safety remains the top priority – even if it means preemptively relocating the crew to a capsule.

For the Crew-12 mission, the incident marks an unexpected turning point. Instead of scientific routine, the four astronauts face standby duty in a cramped capsule for the time being. When they can return to the station depends on how quickly the leak can be contained.
