A worsening air leak in the Russian segment of the International Space Station ISS has prompted the US space agency NASA to order the four crew members of the Crew-12 mission to take shelter in their docked Crew Dragon capsule and prepare for a possible evacuation.

NASA announced the order on Friday. According to the announcement, flight control instructed the crew on Friday at 3:04 PM CEST to proceed to the Crew Dragon capsule docked to the station and seek shelter there. As a NASA representative explained, the astronauts were also to put on their spacesuits in case an emergency required an immediate return to Earth.

The crew of the Crew-12 mission consists of two US astronauts, one French astronaut, and one Russian cosmonaut. Crew-12 had launched to the International Space Station to conduct scientific experiments and reinforce the ISS's permanent crew. By moving into the Dragon capsule, the four secure direct access to a return vehicle that could take them from the station in an emergency.
