Edl and Opatril also posted personal bests, but narrowly missed out on semifinal qualification. Reitshammer, the experienced mentor of the team, congratulated Giefing immediately after his swim.

The previous record holder Felix Auböck had set the mark just under four years ago in Budapest. Observers see the fact that this time was now beaten by a 19-year-old from Burgenland as evidence of a generational change in domestic swimming.
