Despite the disappointment, Mladenovic looked forward. „Ich stecke meinen Kopf nicht in den Sand und freue mich auf die 200 Meter“, he said with a view to his next start. The double distance suits him better according to his own assessment and is considered more promising.

With his reaction, the swimmer showed the attitude that coaches and federation demand in such moments. Instead of looking for mistakes in preparation, he pointed to his daily form and the usual performance curve between morning and afternoon. This is not meant to unnecessarily increase the pressure on the subsequent starts.

The 200m breaststroke will be contested in several heats and offers tactical variations. Should Mladenovic pick up where he left off in his previous performances there, a place in the final remains realistic. There, too, however, he must hold his own against strong competition from several nations.

Until his next start, the athlete has only a little time. Regeneration, tactical discussions and technical fine-tuning are the focus. The preliminaries of the longer breaststroke distance could already begin in the afternoon, making the switch between daily form and competition mode the central challenge.

For the Austrian team, the course of events sends mixed signals. While individual athletes are meeting expectations, Mladenovic's absence in the 100m remains a noticeable gap. The second half of the competition day will show whether his appearance in the 200m can deliver the desired sporting compensation.
