Bayer, Mladenovic and Espernberger advance to semifinals at long-course European Championships in Paris

Bayer and Mladenovic are thus the shooting stars of the Austrian team in the Parisian pool. The previous day, Mladenovic had produced the standout result from an OSV perspective with bronze over 200 meters breaststroke. The performance at the European long-course championships thus proved largely successful from an Austrian viewpoint, even though the other athletes failed to qualify for the next round.

As the Österreichischer Schwimmverband announced, all other Austrian swimmers who took to the starting blocks in Paris have already been eliminated. The hopes for medals on Friday evening and on the following competition day therefore rest on the breaststroke trio. The 50-meter breaststroke event is considered one of the fastest and most technically demanding disciplines in swimming and requires a combination of explosive power and a precise underwater phase. The focus of Austria's medal chances therefore clearly remains in the breaststroke events, where Bayer, Mladenovic and Espernberger can harbour hopes as multiple contenders.

The semifinals in the 50-meter breaststroke event are scheduled for late Friday evening. Should the three Austrians manage to advance to the final, it would be a historic achievement for the small swimming federation at continental championships. The results are to be published by European Aquatics immediately after the conclusion of competition.

Already on Thursday, the Austrian team had shown that it is competitive on the long course. Mladenovic used the 200 meters breaststroke as a stage and secured the bronze medal with a strong performance.
