Clemens Pig elected Austria's new ORF director after marathon foundation council session

Of the 35 foundation council members, 21 voted for Pig in the first ballot after midnight, according to the broadcaster. The vote was the longest in the history of the supervisory body, a body formally tasked with selecting the ORF chief independently and free of party instructions.

A broadcaster under financial pressure

Pig joins ORF at a moment of significant financial strain. Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer announced Wednesday that a €93 million annual tax compensation for the broadcaster will be scrapped starting in 2027, and the household fee has been frozen at roughly €15 through at least 2029. Combined with €300 million in savings already absorbed over the past three years — equivalent to nearly 10 percent of ORF's revenue, or the production cost of 49 Tatort episodes, according to the daily Kurier — the cuts amount to a loss of about a ninth of the broadcaster's income under the 2027/28 budget.

Pig, a Tyrolean born in 1974, led the APA group from 2015 and took over as chair in 2016. He has written two books on digital transformation and is described as a tech-oriented, integrity-focused media manager. He has no television experience, a point raised repeatedly in coverage of the selection process.

Pig's reform agenda

More than 70 candidates applied for the position; nine were invited to hearings, including Markus Breitenecker, the long-time head of private broadcaster group Puls 4 who most recently sat on the board of German parent ProSiebenSat.1. It is the first time in decades that the broadcaster, which has around 4,000 employees, will bring in a general director from outside its own ranks.

Pig's written concept includes a reform playbook with dozens of measure bundles ranging from finances to trust, and proposes four new directorates covering program and brands, audience and platforms, technology and innovation, and finance. A joint 'interdisciplinary hub' is intended to coordinate programming, audience strategy and digital strategy. He has also signaled he will question existing structures, including subsidiaries, and plans to 'reorder' the channel ORF 3.

In his application materials, Pig argued that the ORF is 'politically and socially particularly vulnerable.' He wrote: 'The ORF does not need a pose of revolution, but also not a mere continuation of the familiar.' On AI, he warned: 'The great concern is that the internet as a whole is transforming into an AI internet, in which every form of pluralism is lost.' The broadcaster's news operation, he said, must be 'faktenbasiert, quellenstark, plural, sauber im Wording' — fact-based, source-strong, pluralistic, clean in wording — and must work from the democratic center for the entire country rather than for a single milieu.

Political backlash over the selection

Pig's election has not ended the political dispute around the process. Peter Westenthaler, a foundation council member close to the right-wing FPÖ, alleged that the governing parties SPÖ and ÖVP had agreed on a candidate before the position was publicly advertised and announced he would challenge the vote. Speaking to journalists, he called the selection 'ausgepackelt' and described the process as an 'ekelhaften Inszenierung' — a 'disgusting staging.'

The allegations that led to Weißmann's resignation in March were initially communicated as 'sexual harassment' and later recharacterized as 'inappropriate behavior.' Weißmann has denied the allegations. The new general director will inherit an organization shaped by that scandal, with the popular show Millionenshow and several early-evening quiz formats already being cut and hundreds of jobs in question.

ORF operates four television channels, twelve radio stations, a streaming platform and Austria's largest news website, with a total budget of around €1.1 billion. Under a new arrangement, the broadcaster will be permitted to draw €780 million from contribution revenues, up from the current €710 million. Pig will take up his office on the sixth floor of the ORF center on the Küniglberg in Vienna in January 2027.
