Vienna, June 12, 2026
Clemens Pig was elected in the night to Friday by the ORF Foundation Council with 21 of 35 votes as the new General Director of the ORF and will take office on January 1, 2027.
The vote on Thursday lasted a total of 15 hours and ended well after midnight, when Clemens Pig was presented to the waiting media as the new General Director. As the ORF reported, Pig described the result as a "sehr breites und übergreifendes Votum". He said on Friday on the Ö1-Mittagsjournal that, in addition to the votes of the SPÖ Foundation Council members, he had also received votes from staff representatives and from the bourgeois camp.
Before the decision was made, however, Pig had to endure what was described in reporting as a "teilweise unwürdiges Schauspiel". The background included an internal dispute within the ÖVP over the personnel matter: while the candidacy was supported in central Vienna, there were different views in some provincial capitals. ÖVP General Secretary Nico Marchetti had publicly named Pig, which led to Pig subsequently being regarded as the government's candidate.
