Colombia's army has seized approximately 1.8 tons of cocaine in an alleged drug lab belonging to the guerrilla organization ELN, reporting one of the largest drug seizures of the year.
According to reports, the narcotics operation took place in the northern Catatumbo region on the border with Venezuela. Soldiers secured the facility, equipment, and the large quantity of cocaine, as the armed forces announced on Saturday (local time). Presidential advisor Abelardo de la Espriella had previously reported the find.
In recent months, the conflict between the ELN and a family clan involved in drug trafficking had intensified in Catatumbo. Both groups are vying for control of territories that are crucial for the cultivation of coca and the smuggling of cocaine toward the USA and Europe.
