Schwerin, July 1, 2026

In the Schwerin state parliament, a joint proposal by the SPD, The Left, and the Greens to amend the state constitution of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania failed on July 1, 2026 to secure the required two-thirds majority.

What Was the Reform About?

The SPD and Left "red-red" state government, together with the Greens, had aimed to enshrine in the constitution that the election of judges for the State Constitutional Court cannot be blocked in parliament. The initiative was intended to prevent blockades in the election of judges and to permanently ensure the court's ability to function.
