The SPD is speaking out against enshrining heat protection in the Basic Law, citing existing provisions such as Article 104b of the Basic Law, which already enable the federal government to provide financial assistance to the federal states and municipalities.
The SPD is thereby positioning itself against a push that had been introduced in recent weeks by parts of the political sphere and from civil society. According to this, protection against the consequences of heat was to be explicitly enshrined in the Basic Law in order to permanently obligate the federal government, the federal states, and the municipalities. The Social Democrats, however, consider this undertaking unnecessary.
