Berlin, 16 August 2026

Federal ministries under SPD leadership presented an interdepartmental action plan against extreme heat on 16 August 2026 and simultaneously called for an amendment to the Basic Law in order to release federal funds on a long-term basis for municipal and state tasks in climate impact adaptation and nature conservation.

The action plan bundles measures from several federal ministries and ranges from heat protection in cities to the adaptation of water supply and agriculture, as well as specifications for hospitals and care facilities. The goal is to cushion the consequences of rising temperatures and more frequent heatwaves for the population and to prepare the administration for recurring extreme weather events. The ministries involved point to a clustering of heat records in recent summers and see a need for action.
