Austria's Arbeiterkammer Oberösterreich has secured a €1,000 refund for a woman from Upper Austria who paid for a franchise weight-loss method marketed as 'Abnehmen im Liegen'.

The consumer protection department of the Arbeiterkammer Oberösterreich (AK OÖ) said the woman was entitled to the full repayment of the €1,000 fee she had paid for the programme. According to the chamber, the franchise operator had initially refused to return the money when the customer asked for it directly, prompting the AK to take legal action.

Background of the case

The diet was sold under the slogan 'Abnehmen im Liegen', promising weight loss without physical exertion. The AK described such offers as dubious and warned consumers to be cautious of similar marketing claims. 'Derart fragwürdige Angebote gibt es wie Sand am Meer', the chamber's consumer protection team said, adding that questionable offers of this kind are widespread.
