On Thursday, the Council of States recommended by a vote of 24 to 21 to refer the Mitte Party's Fairness Initiative for the constitutional anchoring of joint taxation of married couples to the popular vote in November for rejection.

The debate in the Council of States revolved around the question of whether married couples should be taxed jointly or individually. In March, around 54 percent of voters had approved the introduction of individual taxation. The Mitte Party, with its Fairness Initiative, is pushing back and wants to anchor the joint taxation of married couples in the constitution.
