Los Angeles, 15 June 2026
Just before the Iranian national football team's first match at the 2026 World Cup, a court in the U.S. state of California ruled that the team would be permitted to stay overnight in the USA.
Court Decision on Match Day
On the day of the Iran versus New Zealand match, the Los Angeles County Superior Court issued a ruling that enabled the Iranian team to remain on U.S. soil. As reported by the portal "The Athletic," Judge Kin justified the decision by stating that the right to freedom of expression "is a cornerstone of our society." However, this right was not unlimited, particularly in relation to private actors on private property, and as previous decisions had shown, it could "be regulated in a reasonable manner."
