Mexico City, 25 May 2026
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on 25 May 2026 that the United States opposed the Iranian national football team staying overnight on U.S. soil, a decision that prompted FIFA to move the squad’s World Cup quarter from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana, Mexico.
Sheinbaum told reporters that U.S. officials made their position clear. "Die Vereinigten Staaten wollen nicht, dass die iranische Nationalmannschaft in den USA übernachtet," she quoted them as saying.
The Mexican president said FIFA then asked her government whether it would be willing to host the Iranian team. "Die Antwort sei gewesen: 'Ja, kein Problem, wir haben keinerlei Einwände'," Sheinbaum added, confirming that Mexico had no objections.
