Berlin, July 19, 2026
The President of the German Confederation of Skilled Crafts (ZDH), Jörg Dittrich, has described the rising training figures in the crafts sector as a glimmer of hope in a difficult economic situation.
Between January and June 2026, according to his figures, around 67,800 new training contracts were entered into the apprentices' rolls of the crafts sector. This corresponds to an increase of just under five percent compared to the same period the previous year – more than 3,160 additional contracts. The report was broadcast on 19.07.2026 on the Deutschlandfunk program.
Dittrich told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur that the crafts sector is heading toward a fourth consecutive year of rising new-contract figures. He described the June figure as the highest since 2018: "Einen so hohen Juni-Wert hatten wir zuletzt 2018. Das ist eine nachdrückliche Botschaft: Junge Menschen entscheiden sich bewusst für das Handwerk." In some chamber districts, double-digit percentage increases were even recorded.
