German industry orders rise surprisingly sharply in May

According to Destatis, the development was supported by large orders. Such high-volume orders can noticeably influence monthly fluctuations and are an indication that industry can serve individual major customers even in a difficult economic environment.

Thomas Gitzel, chief economist of VP Bank, nevertheless sees a mixed picture. Mechanical engineering was able to record positive order intake in May, "doch das übergeordnete Bild schaut betrüblich aus", he said.

Expert assessment

According to Gitzel's assessment, the burden is particularly evident in the automotive industry and its suppliers. "Der Automobilbau muss sich gesundschrumpfen, worunter viele nachgelagerte Industrien leiden", he explained. He specifically named mechanical engineering as an affected sector: "Darunter insbesondere der Maschinenbau."

Gitzel describes the fundamental mood with a clear reference: "Für die deutsche Wirtschaft sind es derzeit keine einfachen Zeiten." It therefore remains to be seen whether the May increase marks the beginning of a sustained recovery or whether it is an isolated spike.
