Cypriots went to the polls on Sunday to elect a new parliament, with first projections showing the conservative Democratic Rally (DISY) party in the lead, according to state broadcaster RIK.
Polling stations across the internationally recognised southern part of the Mediterranean island opened at 7 a.m. local time (6 a.m. CEST) and closed at 6 p.m., with voters choosing from among more than 740 candidates and 17 parties.
Around 569,000 eligible voters were registered to select the 56 members of the House of Representatives, the country's unicameral legislature. The threshold for a party to enter parliament is 3.6 percent of the vote, a relatively low bar that encourages a fragmented political landscape.
Turnout appeared steady throughout the day, though official figures were not yet available when the projections were released.
