Czech tennis player Jakub Mensik collapsed on Court 6 at Roland Garros on Tuesday immediately after securing a dramatic five-set victory over Argentina’s Mariano Navone in the first round of the French Open.

The 20-year-old had just converted match point in a tiebreak that ended 13-11, sealing a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 win after 4 hours and 41 minutes of play in temperatures reaching 31 degrees Celsius.

Video footage showed Mensik crumpling to the clay surface moments after the final rally. Visibly shaken by cramps, he signaled with his hand that he required assistance, and paramedics rushed onto the court to treat him.

Medical staff attempted to cool the player with large ice packs while he lay on the ground. Mensik’s coach tried to reach his player but was not permitted to enter the court during the medical intervention.
