In a display of sportsmanship, Navone crossed the net and shook hands with his opponent while Mensik was still receiving treatment on the ground. Tournament organizers later praised the moment.

"Großartiger Sportgeist nach einem riesigen Kampf," the French Open organizer wrote in a social media post accompanying footage of the scene.

Mensik later explained that he had been unable to take in electrolytes from the fourth set onward, which led to the physical breakdown. "Ich war ziemlich gut vorbereitet auf das Match in den Bedingungen. Ich konnte dann aber ab dem 4. Satz keine Elektrolyte mehr zu mir nehmen, was dann zu den Problemen geführt hat," he said.

Mensik Explains the Collapse

He described the playing conditions as extreme. "Es war verrückt bei den Bedingungen," Mensik added.

The match was one of the longest and most physically demanding of the opening round. Both players traded sets in a contest that swung back and forth before the decisive tiebreak.

Mensik eventually left the court with a wet towel draped around his neck, limping and visibly exhausted. Tournament officials confirmed he was under medical observation following the incident.

Heat and Player Safety

Forecasts suggest some relief is on the way, with temperatures expected to drop to around 24 degrees Celsius by Sunday.

The incident has reignited discussion about player welfare during extreme heat at Grand Slam tournaments, particularly in the early rounds when matches can stretch beyond four hours without a tiebreak in the deciding set.

Mensik, a rising star on the ATP Tour, is scheduled to play his second-round match later this week, though his participation may depend on medical clearance following Tuesday’s ordeal.
