Czech authorities this week began test drilling at the site known as "Janoch," near the town of Temelín in South Bohemia, as an initial step in the process of selecting the future deep geological repository for nuclear waste, the final location of which will be decided in 2030.

The exploratory work at Janoch, an area located between 50 and 60 kilometers in a straight line from the Austrian border, will reach a depth of approximately 100 meters and will last for about two weeks, according to the Czech authority responsible for the project, Surao (Správa úložišť radioaktivních odpadů). This is the first phase of in-situ investigations at one of the four pre-selected candidates by the government.

The main objective of these drillings is to obtain detailed data on the composition of the subsoil and the distribution of groundwater in the candidate area, essential information for evaluating the geological suitability of the site and ruling out potential risks for the storage of spent fuel and other high-activity waste.
