Daniel Warmuth's "Bist du deppert" becomes Austria's new cult moment

Speaking to the broadcaster, the 39-year-old described the moment in retrospect as "Das war ein emotionaler Ausbruch, den ich selbst nicht kontrollieren konnte. Es war ein Höhepunkt für Eishockey-Österreich und auch für mich persönlich." Another quoted statement reads: "Mich beutelt es komplett durch." From the microphone to the football stage

The match against Algeria was Warmuth's first World Cup commentary of an Austrian national football team game. Sitting alongside him was co-commentator Andi Herzog, who was already on the pitch during stoppage time to prepare the analysis together with Rainer Pariasek. The interplay between the agitated voice at the microphone and the swiftly beginning on-site analysis made the moment a piece of live television history for many viewers.

Even before this incident, Warmuth had made a name for himself in Austrian sports broadcasting. Parallels to Edi Finger

ORF and parts of the domestic media are drawing parallels to Edi Finger, who attained cult status through his reports on the legendary 1978 World Cup match in Córdoba against Germany. Finger's name is currently mentioned regularly when it comes to iconic radio commentaries from the broadcaster. Warm words for the current commentator come from within the editorial team, where the comparison with Finger's spontaneity is invoked.

The response to Warmuth's outburst extends beyond classic sports reporting. Short audio clips spread across social networks within minutes, and numerous users chose "Bist du deppert" as the unofficial quote of the day in sports. Other ORF presenters are also being linked to the event – for instance, Andi Knoll, whose appearances at the Song Contest are regarded as the benchmark for ORF presentation.

From an objective standpoint, it should be noted that the match against Algeria left mixed sporting feelings. Austria missed the chance for a possible win in regular time but at least salvaged a point against an uncomfortable opponent.
