Weimar, 14 June 2026

The German writer Daniela Danz was honored on Sunday in Weimar with the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Literature Prize 2026.

The author, born in Eisenach and living in the Weimarer Land, received the award, endowed with 20,000 euros, on Sunday in Weimar. The 49-year-old, who writes poetry, essays, and prose, belongs, according to the independent jury, to the unmistakable voices of contemporary German-language literature.

Acceptance Speech: The Freedom of Art Is Not a Given

In her acceptance speech, Danz pointed to her personal biography in the GDR. The manuscript of her speech states that in that state, free art was not a given, not every sentence could be spoken, and not every deviation was tolerated. With a view to the present, she added: "Und obwohl ich mittlerweile dreimal so lange in einem Staat mit einer freiheitlich-demokratischen Grundordnung lebe, scheint mir die Freiheit der Kunst noch immer keine Selbstverständlichkeit zu sein".
