After the death of a 42-year-old Moroccan man during a police operation in Bologna's Pilastro neighborhood, hundreds of people protested against police on Sunday evening, while the public prosecutor's office opened an investigation into the circumstances.
The deceased has been identified by authorities as Abderrahim Fakir, who had lived in Italy since early childhood and, according to his lawyer, held valid documents. His lawyer, Barbara Spinelli, who had assisted him with the renewal of his residence permit, described him as a friendly, well-educated, respectful person. She said: „Jetzt kann ich niemandem mehr sagen, dass er keine Angst zu haben braucht".
According to the police account, officers were called to the Pilastro neighborhood on Sunday via the 112 emergency number after residents reported a man behaving aggressively. Upon arrival, the man had struck a patrol car, among other things, according to authorities. The officers involved described the incident as a mental health crisis of the man, according to Italian media reports.
