A 43-year-old man has died during a police operation in Bologna's Pilastro district after two uniformed officers pinned him to the ground for several minutes despite his calls for help.

What happened in Pilastro?

According to the Italian news agency Ansa, police officers were dispatched late in the morning to the Pilastro district, northeast of the university, after neighbors raised the alarm over the man's violent outburst. The 43-year-old reportedly rammed a patrol car at first. The officers used pepper spray and placed him in handcuffs.

The Italian daily newspaper La Repubblica published a video showing the subsequent sequence of events. It shows two uniformed police officers sitting on the man as he lies on the ground for an extended period, while a third man in civilian clothes holds him by the ankles. In the footage, apparently filmed from a neighbor's window, the man repeatedly calls for help.
