A 43-year-old man has died in the Pilastro district of Bologna following a police operation in which, according to eyewitness reports, he repeatedly called for help while two officers pinned him to the ground.

Sequence of events

Neighbors had called police at midday to the Pilastro district because the man was reportedly behaving aggressively. As the news agency ANSA reported, the 43-year-old struck the police vehicle after the patrol arrived. The officers then used pepper spray and placed handcuffs as well as cable ties on his wrists.

As the Italian daily La Repubblica shows using a video taken from a neighboring building, the man repeatedly called for help while on the ground. In the more than five-minute-long recording, he can be heard calling out „Aiuto. Basta, basta!" – "Help! Enough, enough!". During this phase, two police officers sat on him, while a third man in civilian clothing held him by the ankles.
