The number of fatalities from a chemical tank rupture at a Washington state packaging plant on Tuesday has risen to eleven, according to local fire officials.

The accident occurred at a facility operated by Nippon Dynawave Packaging, a U.S. subsidiary of Japan's Nippon Paper Industries. The company produces paper and packaging for liquids.

A massive storage tank containing approximately 3.4 million liters of white liquor burst, releasing large quantities of the highly caustic chemical. White liquor is a solution used in the pulp and paper industry during the kraft process to break down wood chips into cellulose fibers.
