Deaths in new Israeli attacks in Gaza Strip despite ceasefire

Ceasefire and ongoing violence

A ceasefire has officially been in place in the Gaza Strip since October last year. Nevertheless, Israeli attacks and armed incidents continue to occur repeatedly. Since the beginning of the ceasefire, more than 1,000 people have been killed according to figures from the health authority controlled by Hamas.

Most recently, Israel had increasingly published notices stating that suspected members of the terrorist organizations Hamas and Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip had been specifically killed. The Israeli army regularly justifies such operations with security interests and action against armed groups.

The civil defense in the Gaza Strip is, according to the report, controlled by Hamas and regularly provides casualty figures that are sometimes difficult to verify internationally. The Israeli figures on those killed are also not confirmed in every individual case by independent observers.

Humanitarian situation and unclear casualty figures

The ceasefire had been reached after months of indirect negotiations mediated by several states. Since it came into effect, the situation for the roughly two million residents of the coastal area has hardly stabilized on a lasting basis.

Aid organizations had repeatedly pointed out in recent months the catastrophic humanitarian situation. Hospitals are operating only on a limited basis, and the supply of food, water, and medicine remains precarious.

International reactions

International observers in the meantime called for a more consistent implementation of the ceasefire and better protection of the civilian population. Diplomatic channels remained active according to mediators, but no concrete progress was reported.

The situation thus remains fragile: officially a ceasefire is in place, but in fact people continue to die in attacks and armed clashes — a state of affairs that makes the search for a lasting solution additionally more difficult.
