Debate over fitness equipment at Meidling Cemetery: Critics accuse the City of Vienna of a lack of respect

The investment is drawing fierce criticism in Viennese municipal politics. FPÖ state parliament member Lukas Brucker spoke of a lack of respect and a waste of taxpayers' money. "Wer auf die absurde Idee kommt, Trainingsgeräte zwischen Grabstätten aufzustellen, hat jedes Gespür für Pietät verloren", Brucker is quoted as saying. Supporters of the project argue that the Silent Walk trail invites people to experience nature consciously and in a quiet atmosphere. The aim is to open up the cemetery as a public space without displacing its character as a place of remembrance. The additional Plauderbankerl is intended to encourage encounters between visitors.

In a much-cited objection: "Ein Friedhof ist ein Ort der Trauer, des Gedenkens und der Ruhe, kein Fitnesscenter." The discussion comes at a time when the cost of living in Vienna is rising and municipal budget pressure is increasing. Against this backdrop, the sum of more than 35,000 euros for individual pieces of fitness equipment seems particularly explosive to many observers. The opposition is calling for a transparent breakdown of the costs as well as a debate about which projects in public spaces should take priority.
