Deutsche Bahn: Additional Diversions Required During Lehrte–Berlin Corridor Renovation

Background to the Corridor Renovation

The renovation is rooted in the general overhaul of one of the most important north-south connections in the German rail network. The line between Lehrte in Lower Saxony and Berlin is one of the most heavily used corridors in the country and connects, among others, the hubs of Hanover, Braunschweig and the capital.

According to Deutsche Bahn, the central issue under discussion is how freight and passenger traffic can be reliably managed during the months-long construction works. Because of interventions in tracks, overhead lines and signal boxes, numerous trains must be diverted via other route sections. In this context, the company referred to diversion routes already set up via Eichenberg, Fulda, Halle as well as via the so-called Stammbahn.

Diversions via Alternative Routes

Despite these measures, calls from the business community are growing to put the overall concept on a more viable footing. The interest group Die Güterbahnen has jointly called on the federal government and Deutsche Bahn to promptly present a proposal that secures the renovation and the long-term financing of the diversion routes.

Demands from Die Güterbahnen

According to industry representatives, the focus is above all on the burden placed on the diversion routes. The additional freight trains that run via alternative routes during the full closures of the main corridor claim capacities that are already in short supply. From Die Güterbahnen's perspective, a sustainable solution must therefore consider both the period of the general renovation and the permanent condition of the diversion routes.

Deutsche Bahn CEO Evelyn Palla had recently stressed on several occasions that the general renovation of the Lehrte–Berlin corridor is a central building block for modernising the German rail network. The construction measures are intended to improve the punctuality and performance of the line in the long term, but they come with significant restrictions on ongoing operations.

Impact on Passengers

For passengers, this means that travel times may be extended during the construction phases and that individual services may be cancelled or routed via other lines. Deutsche Bahn points out that information on the changed timetables is currently available through the company's information channels.

It remains unclear which additional diversions will specifically be added and which sections will be particularly affected. The company announced that details on expanded diversion concepts will be published in due course.

State of the Construction Works

At the same time, according to Deutsche Bahn, the actual construction works on the Lehrte–Berlin corridor are proceeding as planned. The renovation covers tracks, switches, overhead lines and signalling technology along the line and is part of the nationwide programme for the general renovation of heavily used rail corridors.

Observers see the now-publicised additional diversions as a sign that the operational impacts associated with the corridor renovation are greater than initially assumed. At the same time, this increases the pressure on all parties involved to keep the construction phases as short and the restrictions as minimal as possible.
