Deutsche Bahn is now equipping around 2,000 long-distance employees with so-called body cameras in order to better document assaults by passengers and increase employee safety.
The federally owned company announced on Tuesday that the cameras would be attached to work uniforms and that their use would remain voluntary. The measure is part of the so-called action plan for greater safety on the rails that the group's leadership had announced following a fatal attack on a train attendant on a regional train in February.
Accordingly, the equipment covers train attendants as well as employees in onboard catering and in the DB Lounges. Previously, body cameras had only been used by Deutsche Bahn in regional rail. With the expansion to long-distance rail, the company is implementing a key element of the announcement made by Bahn CEO Evelyn Palla, according to which all employees with customer contact should receive such a camera on a voluntary basis this year.
