Dresden, 20 July 2026

Outside a bookshop in Dresden's Old Town, around two dozen people queued over the weekend to buy Diddl collectible pads – triggered by a social media post from an employee.

Nostalgia as an economic factor

The comeback of probably the best-known jumping mouse of the 1990s is accompanied, according to the online platform "Kleinanzeigen," by a broad wave of nostalgia for products from that era. Digital cameras and the electronic toy "Tamagotchi," which became known in the late 1990s, are also said to have become popular again; overall, search queries have risen by more than 70 percent.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Diddl products were sought-after collectible and trading items in Germany, especially among schoolchildren. Today, those children of the past are in their thirties and are earning their own money to fulfil the dreams of yesteryear, it was said. At a bookshop in Dresden's Old Town, people are therefore not queuing for a new novel, but for the Diddl Mouse.
