Dozens of forest fires in Greece – Firefighters battle mainly on the island of Salamis

As the fire department further reported, the most difficult fire was raging on the island of Salamis, located off Athens. Emergency forces were deployed with ground and air support to stop its spread.

According to reports from Greek broadcaster ERT and the news agency APA, fires were also reported in other parts of the country besides Salamis. The exact number of affected regions was initially unclear, as the situation was developing dynamically.

Civil protection and military deployed

The Greek civil protection agency set up preparatory measures and coordinated the operations with regional authorities. Citizens were asked through official channels to follow the instructions of the authorities and to report any fires immediately.

Military facilities have been involved in the preparations. According to reports, the Greek navy is supporting the efforts with forces from nearby naval bases, for instance in providing firefighting materials and logistics.

Weather situation and preparedness

The weather situation plays a central role in the assessment. High temperatures, dry vegetation, and wind favor the rapid spread of fires during the summer months, which is why the authorities are expecting a further worsening.

It is still unclear whether there have been any injuries or significant property damage. The fire department intended to publish further information during the course of the day on the extent of the fires and possible evacuations.

The authorities also warned of a possible worsening of the situation in the coming hours and called on the public to exercise increased caution. Hiking, open fires outdoors, and agricultural work that could produce sparks should be avoided.
