Bordeaux, August 3, 2026

In the forests cleared in connection with the forest fire around Bordeaux, clearance teams have discovered numerous unexploded grenades from World War I, as the responsible authorities announced on August 3, 2026.

The finds come from the cleared forest zones in Gironde, which have been suffering for weeks under the flames of a massive forest fire. During routine inspections, clearance teams encountered a large number of unexploded ordnance items of various calibers that had apparently made their way into the forest soil during World War I, according to the prefecture. Security forces have cordoned off the areas over a wide perimeter and have begun documented disposal operations.
