The Democratic Republic of Congo reached the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup for the first time, but was eliminated there with a 1:2 loss to England – and immediately after the match, national team coach Sébastien Desabre received the news of his father's death.
Historic entry into the knockout stage
The Democratic Republic of Congo missed out on a place in the World Cup quarterfinals on Tuesday evening. In the round of 16, the team managed by national coach Sébastien Desabre lost to England 1:2. For the Congolese side, it was nevertheless a historic evening: the Central African nation had qualified for the knockout round of a World Cup for the very first time.
After the final whistle, the press conference was not only about the sporting outcome. A spokesperson for the Congolese team addressed the assembled journalists and made a personal announcement. „Wir möchten Ihnen mitteilen, dass der Trainer seinen Vater verloren hat. Unser aufrichtiges Beileid“, said the spokesperson.
