Rule and Background
In each half, the referee stops the match after 22 minutes for three minutes so that the players can take in fluids. FIFA justifies the step with the well-being of the players. "Die FIFA bekräftigt damit ihr Engagement für das Wohlbefinden der Spieler beim Turnier," the world governing body stated. The rule applies regardless of the actual temperature: Even at 22 degrees, play is paused, with the indoor areas of the stadiums in some cases cooled down to 21 or 22 degrees – a temperature drop of around ten degrees compared to the outside temperature.
Supporters of the measure point above all to the health aspects for the players. Scientists had called for cooling breaks of at least six minutes at temperatures above 28 degrees. Player Kai Havertz also sees advantages: "In manchen Stadien wird es schon sehr heiß. Deswegen finde ich eine Trinkpause ganz gut." Belgium's coach Rudi Garcia assessed the World Cup innovation positively: "Für mich geht die Gesundheit der Spieler immer vor. Deshalb ist es für mich sehr wichtig." The Austrian national coach added: "Sonst kannst du sie ja von außen kaum erreichen."
