Persistent drought has driven the water level of the Po River in northern Italy to roughly 70 percent below the long-term average, according to the Italian association of irrigation and drainage consortia Anbi, while farmers, Parmesan producers, and fishing operations simultaneously suffer under heat waves.

Water Emergency on the Po

According to the Italian association of irrigation and drainage consortia Anbi, the flow of the Po River near the locality of Pontelagoscuro close to the city of Ferrara is around 70 percent below the long-term average. Irrigation in the affected area has been suspended in order to prevent damage to the fields caused by salty water.

The drought has not yet reached the scale of the record summer of 2022. Nevertheless, the industry warns that, according to the responsible river basin authority, the available reserves are sufficient for only about one more week of irrigation. At the river mouth, seawater is advancing inland. The so-called saltwater wedge has already traveled a distance of 20 to 25 kilometers.
