Due to a persistent heatwave, the water level of Lake Garda has dropped by around ten centimeters within a week, according to the Veneto region, which has subsequently declared a state of emergency.
Record-Losses
Italy's largest lake is currently losing more than seven billion liters of water per day, according to calculations by the Italian daily newspaper L'Arena. According to these figures, the daily evaporation loss corresponds to around 7.4 million cubic meters. On particularly hot days, the lake can lose up to two centimeters in water level through evaporation alone, the newspaper reported. According to L'Arena, the current heatwave in Northern Italy is developing into one of the most intense of the past hundred years.
