Drunk driver without a license crashes head-on into oncoming car on L406 – two seriously injured

Both parties involved in the accident were seriously injured. "Beide Unfallbeteiligten wurden schwer verletzt", the police said. Regarding the health condition of the 27-year-old, the officers stated: "Er befindet sich derzeit in Lebensgefahr."

The 27-year-old was trapped in his vehicle and had to be freed by emergency services. "Der 27-Jährige wurde in seinem Fahrzeug eingeklemmt und musste von Einsatzkräften befreit werden", the police described the complex rescue operation. "Mehrere Feuerwehren, der Rettungsdienst und die Polizei standen im Einsatz."

Rescue operation and hospitals

The 25-year-old woman was taken to LKH Oberwart. "Die Frau wurde ins LKH Oberwart eingeliefert." An alcohol test conducted on her came back negative. "Während ein Alkotest bei der 25-Jährigen negativ verlief", the police said.

In the case of the 27-year-old, however, emergency personnel detected significant intoxication. "wurde bei dem 27-Jährigen laut der Polizei eine erhebliche Alkoholisierung festgestellt." The Graz Public Prosecutor's Office then ordered a blood draw. "Die Staatsanwaltschaft Graz ordnete eine Blutabnahme an."

Investigations and legal consequences

Compounding matters, the man did not possess a valid driver's license. "Zudem war er ohne gültige Lenkberechtigung unterwegs", the police explained. The officers also made clear: "Er hätte in seinem Zustand kein Fahrzeug lenken dürfen".

After receiving initial medical care, the seriously injured 27-year-old was first taken to LKH Hartberg and subsequently transferred by rescue helicopter to LKH Graz. "Der Mann wurde zunächst in das LKH Hartberg gebracht und anschließend mit dem Rettungshubschrauber in das LKH-Graz überstellt." The woman is receiving medical care at LKH Oberwart.

For the duration of the accident investigation and recovery operations, the L406 had to be fully closed. "Die L406 war für die Dauer der Unfallaufnahme und Bergungsarbeiten rund eineinhalb Stunden vollständig gesperrt." Traffic on the Landesstraße in the district of Hartberg-Fürstenfeld came to a standstill during this time.

Investigations into the exact course of the accident are ongoing. In addition to the results of the ordered blood draw, authorities are also examining what legal consequences driving without a valid license in combination with severe intoxication will have for the 27-year-old.
