Düsseldorf, Germany — May 18, 2026
Amid a sharp rise in e-scooter accidents involving children, Düsseldorf’s E-Scooter Academy is equipping students with essential safety skills through hands-on training and theoretical lessons.
Rising Accident Rates Prompt Safety Push
In 2025, 566 children under 14 were involved in e-scooter accidents in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), marking a 72% increase from the previous year, according to traffic safety data. The surge has prompted urgent measures to improve rider education, particularly among young users.
The Düsseldorf Traffic Watch, which has offered adult e-scooter training since 2019, expanded its program this spring to include schools. The E-Scooter Academy, free for participating institutions, is funded by the NRW State Traffic Watch, the Düsseldorf Traffic Watch, and e-scooter rental companies.
