According to this, around ten percent of Austrian respondents would choose a pure e-car for their next vehicle purchase, another ten percent a plug-in hybrid, and 15 percent a classic hybrid without a plug. The majority of respondents, however, stick with combustion engines or are still undecided.

The results show that interest in electrified powertrains extends beyond the pure electric share. Taken together, around 35 percent of respondents express a corresponding purchase intention for e-cars, plug-in hybrids, and full hybrids. Industry observers see this as an indication that the trough in market growth has not yet been reached, but the ramp-up is differentiating itself more strongly than in previous years.

Expansion of Charging Infrastructure and Subsidies

The Ministry of Mobility (BMIMI) points out that the public charging infrastructure is also growing. The number of charging points along highways and in urban areas has increased in recent months, improving everyday usability for commuters. Funding programs for private wallboxes and the expansion of fast-charging hubs along main traffic arteries are also being continued.

Market analysts see the figure of 300,000 e-cars as a psychologically important milestone. In international comparison, Austria remains below countries such as Norway or the Netherlands, but has caught up noticeably in Central Europe. The share of pure e-cars in the total passenger car stock remains moderate at around five percent.

Market Perspectives and Next Steps

For the coming months, the ministry expects registration figures to continue rising. Key factors cited are new models in the compact and mid-size segments, falling entry-level prices, and the expansion of charging infrastructure. The fleet conversion of companies and public administrations will also gain momentum, according to the BMIMI.

The purchase intention from the Deloitte survey also sends a signal to manufacturers and dealers that demand for alternative powertrains exists but is not dominant. The majority of consumers continue to consider e-mobility as one option among several. Future market development will depend on how purchase prices, energy costs, and charging convenience change in the coming years.

Overall, a stable, albeit moderate, growth curve is emerging. The figure of 300,000 e-cars in the stock is less a turning point than an intermediate target on the way to higher shares. Politics and industry are focusing on the further expansion of subsidies, the charging network, and the model range to gradually increase the share of pure electric cars in the total stock.
