E-Scooter Battery Catches Fire in Vienna Stairwell – Resident Rescued Through Window

Vienna's professional fire brigade deployed with several vehicles and handled both the rescue and the firefighting. According to the emergency services, the affected person was recovered uninjured. Other residents of the building also remained uninjured, according to the fire brigade.

Course of the Operation

Emergency services from Vienna's professional fire brigade emphasized that lithium batteries – as used in e-scooters, e-bikes, or similar small devices – can suddenly catch fire if damaged, overheated, or improperly handled. According to experts, such fires produce a great deal of smoke and can spread to nearby objects within seconds.

Vienna's professional fire brigade warns that batteries should never be stored or charged in hallways, stairwells, or in front of emergency exits. In addition, defective or swollen batteries should be disposed of properly without delay. Charging directly under the bed or on flammable surfaces is also expressly discouraged.

The Vienna professional fire brigade issued the specific advisory: "Akkus dürfen außerdem keinesfalls auf Fluchtwegen gelagert oder geladen werden." It also referred to the relevant safety guidelines for the home use of lithium-ion batteries, which require special precautions in the event of damage.

Why Batteries Can Become Dangerous

After the firefighting operations ended and the stairwell had been ventilated, the fire brigade was able to conclude the operation. No information on the amount of damage or on any other potentially affected apartments was initially provided. Körnergasse, located in the immediate vicinity of the Prater, was only passable with restrictions for through-traffic during the operation.

Lithium-ion batteries have repeatedly been the cause of apartment and stairwell fires across Europe in recent years. In the so-called thermal runaway, a single battery builds up pressure, can emit flames, and draw neighboring cells into a chain reaction. This is also why emergency services respond to such reports with great caution.

Fire Brigade Recommendations

The Vienna emergency services appeal to the public to take any abnormalities such as strong heating, odor development, or deformations of batteries seriously and, in the event of a fire, to contact the fire brigade via the emergency number 122. Apartments should then be left immediately and doors to the fire area closed to slow the spread of smoke.

Körnergasse is located in the densely built Leopoldstadt district, where many stairwells do not have open access balconies. Especially in such buildings, a clear escape route is of particular importance. The fire brigade announced that it would further investigate the incident as part of its cause-of-fire inquiry and, if necessary, publish additional safety advisories.
