Berlin, 22 July 2026

Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD) has sent the announced draft law for an early-start pension into the interministerial coordination of the federal government, which is to apply retroactively from 1 January 2026 starting with the 2020 birth cohort.

At the heart of the project is a state-subsidized retirement provision depot for children and young people. The federal government intends to pay ten euros per month into an individual, capital-funded depot for every child from the 6th to the 18th year of life. The draft was first reported by the Funke Mediengruppe.

According to the Finance Ministry, the depot can be opened by the parents with a provider of their choice or held as a public capital investment. Supplementary payments are to be possible up to 6,840 euros per year. As things stand, the state funds will flow in no earlier than from the age of six, i.e., for children who turn six in the respective calendar year.
