Germany's five eastern federal states reached about 79 percent of the western economic level in 2025, according to a new analysis by the German Economic Institute (IW) in Cologne, marking another year without convergence.

A gap that refuses to close

The figure comes from the IW's so-called Einheitsindex, a long-running measure of economic parity between the former East and West Germany more than three decades after reunification. The institute said the five eastern Länder – Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia – collectively produced just under 79 percent of western output in 2025, leaving the gap essentially unchanged from recent years.
