The Greens are calling for family-friendly opening hours across kindergartens and after-school care centers, as the 2024/25 daycare statistics reveal a stark east-west divide in summer closures.
Austrian-wide, 86 percent of daycare facilities — including crèches, kindergartens, and after-school care centers combined — are open for at least 47 weeks per year, according to the 2024/25 daycare statistics cited by the Greens in support of their demand. The disparities between federal states are particularly pronounced in summer, when many facilities close for weeks at a time.
While Burgenland sees just half a closure day in summer, Styria records five, Vienna and Lower Austria seven, Tyrol, Upper Austria, and Carinthia 13 each, and Vorarlberg as well as Salzburg a full 15 days apiece. The Greens view this as a structural problem for working parents. The press release states verbatim: „Statt einer verlässlichen öffentlichen Betreuung gilt vielerorts noch immer das Prinzip: 'Die Mama wird's schon richten.'"
