Travel Routes with Increased Risk of Traffic Jams

Authorities expect the heaviest traffic loads of the entire holiday travel period on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Particularly affected are the West Autobahn (A1), the Tauern Autobahn (A10), the Inntal Autobahn (A12), the Brenner Autobahn (A13), the Fernpass Road (B179), and the Karawanken Autobahn (A11).

All of these routes lead to classic travel destinations in the Alps and in the south, as well as to Italy and Slovenia. Anyone starting their holiday from western or southern Austria in the coming days should expect traffic jams and delays on these routes.

While the start of school in Vienna, Lower Austria, and Burgenland is scheduled again for September 7, classes in the south and west begin one week later, on September 14. This means that pupils in the west and south have a total of one week more holiday than their peers in the east.

Different School Start Dates in September

The staggered start of holidays has been common practice for years and is intended to spread out road travel and rail capacity utilization. However, it also means that families with school-age children in different federal states cannot necessarily plan their vacation at the same time.

For public transport, the start of the holidays also marks the beginning of the summer timetables, which in many places come with a reduced service on the already heavily frequented western and southern routes. Travelers are asked to check for changed departure times in advance and allow extra time if necessary.

Parents and guardians driving their children by car to a holiday destination should, according to the traffic authorities' recommendations, either set off very early in the morning or only late in the evening in order to avoid the peak times on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.

Police are also announcing increased checks on the routes mentioned. The main focuses are compliance with speed limits, seatbelt requirements, and the inspection of load securing on vehicles carrying luggage or bicycle racks.

Overall, the summer season on Austria's transit routes is considered one of the most challenging of recent years, since in addition to the traditional travel destinations, new destinations in Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean have also gained in popularity.
