Burundi, Rwanda, and Uganda have intensified screening measures at border crossings and activated emergency plans, according to the WHO. The Africa CDC is coordinating cross-border surveillance; the rapid detection of suspected cases is crucial, according to Kaseya.

According to the WHO, the origins of the current outbreak trace back to an infection in the Bulambao region in South Kivu province. From there, the virus spread along trade routes and through displacement into further health zones. The authorities are working under high pressure to contain the chains of transmission.
