In eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the Ebola virus has spread faster than in any previously known outbreak, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
An Outbreak at Record Speed
Within just two months, 2,073 cases were confirmed in the region, and 796 people died from the infection. WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus warned in Geneva on Friday that the outbreak continues to outpace the response of aid workers. "Das ist keine Wohltätigkeit, sondern eine Investition in nationale Sicherheit," Tedros said, calling on donor countries to provide greater support.
According to the WHO, more than 80 percent of new cases are being detected outside of already identified contact lists. This significantly complicates the tracking of infection chains. Tedros acknowledged that the outbreak continues to "outpace" the response – literally: to advance faster than the containment measures.
