The European Central Bank (ECB) has selected 36 payment service providers from across the euro area to take part in the pilot project for the digital euro.
Following a call for expressions of interest in March 2026, the Eurosystem received more than 50 applications from payment service providers. From this pool, the ECB has now chosen 36 participants. The selection was guided by predefined eligibility criteria. Among the selected providers are both banks and non-banks, covering a broad range of business models, sizes, and geographic coverage.
The 36 service providers will take on one of two roles in the pilot project or combine both. Distributing payment service providers enable Eurosystem staff to set up and use a digital euro account in the beta version to make payments. Acquiring payment service providers, in turn, make it possible for selected merchants to accept digital euro payments. Some providers will play a dual role in the pilot project, acting as both acquirers and distributors.
