The Bundesbank views the digital euro and the European payment solution Wero as complementary building blocks of a joint European payment infrastructure. Board member Lutz Lienenkämper spoke out in favor of a closer interlocking of the two systems, without understanding the digital euro as a replacement for cash or private solutions.
Bundesbank board member Lutz Lienenkämper has spoken out in favor of more closely interlinking the planned digital euro and the European payment solution Wero.
Lienenkämper sees the two projects not as competitors but as a complement. In his words, the digital euro should transfer central bank money into the digital sphere and thereby offer a reliable, universally accessible, and data-protection-friendly payment option across Europe. Wero, in turn, is positioned as a private, market-driven solution designed to bundle card payments and instant credit transfers between European countries.
